If you’re Active Duty military living overseas looking to purchase a vehicle here are some tips to streamline the process:

  1. Do your research
Are you eligible? Check here: Overseas Auto Buying Program. The military sales program is open to U.S. service personnel on Permanent Change of Station or Temporary Duty orders outside the U.S.
Research the terrain and weather conditions of your new base location. This will help decide what kind of vehicle will be most practical for you. For example, if the terrain is rough and hilly, an SUV may be more realistic than a motorcycle, especially if the roads surrounding the base aren’t paved.
  2. Create a budget
Budget for the cost of your vehicle, but also consider the cost of insurance, taxes and registration fees. If you’re financing the vehicle, consider how your budget and credit score will weigh in.
Call your insurance company and notify them you’ll be purchasing a new vehicle. Compare quotes of different cars before you purchase. Insurance on vehicles can vary greatly. If your budget is tight, this cost will be an important factor in your decision-making process.
  3. Make it yours
If you don’t mind waiting a little longer, you can custom order your new vehicle to get the exact make, model, color and special features you want. Otherwise, just choose from a wide selection of in-stock vehicles available for immediate delivery.

Servicemembers can also purchase a vehicle through the program while overseas and have it delivered to their hometown in the U.S., so their new vehicle is ready for them upon their return.
