Every moment counts when you’re with your family and friends—and so does every penny. That’s why, when it comes to the holidays, it’s important to spend smart and make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck. Where do you start? Well, as a military servicemember, you have access to some unique financial perks that the general population doesn’t. There are special discounts, programs and organizations that cater specifically to the military. All you have to do is find them.
To get you started, we’ve compiled a few here. From servicemember discounts and the Military Exchange to Navy Federal Credit Union’s Member Mall®, you have an array of resources to help you shop wisely this holiday season and all year long. Learn more about your different savings options now:
Servicemember discounts. While out shopping, don’t forget your military ID. Many retailers offer significant discounts for Active Duty servicemembers, such as popular gift brands Apple, Microsoft® and Nike. If you plan on traveling for the holidays, Southwest Airlines also offers a discount if you call to book your flight. Looking to give your loved ones an experience instead of an item? Both Disney Resorts and Carnival® Cruises have deals for servicemembers. If you’re unsure if a store offers a military discount, don’t be afraid to ask. Often, retailers won’t advertise their discount programs, but they’re available upon request.
Military Exchange. As a military servicemember, you have access to the local Military Exchange. You can buy smarter here because the Military Exchange offers discounted and tax-free name-brand items. Don’t have a lot of time? You can still shop online. All you’ll need to do is register on your military branch’s exchange website with your Social Security Number and date of birth to prove you’re enlisted.
Navy Federal’s Member Mall. As always, members of Navy Federal can also get their shopping done on Member Mall with their Navy Federal Credit Card. You’ll earn up to 15 points or 15 percent cash back per dollar spent just by shopping with it.* Featured retailers include Apple, Best Buy, Sears, Sephora and Walmart. To gain access to Member Mall, sign up for a Navy Federal Credit Card or visit your local branch today.
Support for Overspending. If you find yourself overspending, be sure to check out the Navy’s Fleet and Family Support Program. Those who are enlisted in the Navy have access to the Fleet and Family Support Center. There, you and your family members can find aid for financial management through each center’s appointed Command Financial Specialist (CFS). Your CFS can provide free financial education, training, counseling and information for other financial resources. Together, you’ll be able to develop a holiday spending plan to keep you on track.
