Stay Safe From Skimming

Fraudsters can attach devices over the slot where you insert your ATM card to capture your card number and account information. The devices, known as skimmers, allow the fraudster to then recreate the card and drain the account. Sometimes, they’ll go so far as to install a fake keyboard to capture your PIN number.

If You Suspect Tampering on a Navy Federal Machine

If you suspect a skimming device or fake keyboard has been installed on a Navy Federal ATM, please contact us immediately at 1-888-842-6328.

Contact the police to file a report as well. If you’ve already used the machine, freeze your card and call us right away.

It’s a good idea to monitor your accounts regularly, either by using our mobile app* or checking in online. If you notice suspicious transactions, report them immediately.

How We Protect You

We work around the clock to ensure our ATMs are protected from skimmers and other attacks. We also monitor members’ accounts 24/7 for suspicious activity.

Left Your Card at an ATM?

If you leave your Navy Federal card at an ATM, report it lost at a branch or by calling 1-888-842-6328. use a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) app, such as Skype, to call 1-888-842-6328 from your phone or computer, or dial the toll-free number for your country and carrier.

You Can Protect Yourself

Protect yourself from skimming and other threats at the ATM with these tips:

  • Avoid standalone outdoor or unusual-looking ATMs; choose one in well-lit areas like bank lobbies or department stores.
  • Check to see if anything looks unusual; is something a different color or sticking out?
  • Wiggle the card reader to see if anything is loose. It shouldn’t be. And, if the keypad feels loose or spongy, stop the transaction and notify the ATM operator/owner.
  • Scammers sometimes install cameras to capture you entering your PIN. Shield the keyboard with your hand as you enter your PIN and be aware of anyone standing too closely.
  • Notify the ATM owner immediately if your card isn’t returned from the machine.
  • Report all suspected crimes to the ATM operator/owner and local law enforcement officials.
  • Don't let other people use your cards or know your PIN—memorize the number instead of writing it down.
  • Keep your car doors locked, other windows closed and the engine running when at a drive-thru ATM.
