What is a Navy Federal Visa Buxx Card?

Navy Federal Visa Buxx is a reloadable prepaid Visa Card created especially for teens. It can be used everywhere that accepts Visa Debit Cards—that's millions of locations worldwide

You can add money to the card digitally or over the phone from your Navy Federal Debit or Credit Card (Visa or Mastercard® only) anytime. Plus, you and your teen can review transactions and check the balance online or on the NFCU Prepaid App.*

Why is the Visa Buxx Card safer than carrying cash?

When cash is lost, it's gone forever. However, if the Navy Federal Visa Buxx Card or card number is ever lost or stolen, you're protected with Navy Federal's Zero Liability policy. Your teen's card will be replaced, the PIN will remain the same and the balance will be transferred to the new card. The replacement card will arrive within 5 to 10 business days.

Is there an age limit to have a Visa Buxx Card?

Visa Buxx cardholders must have a valid Social Security Number (SSN) and be at least 13 years old. There's no maximum age limit. (For example, the Visa Buxx cardholder could be 22 years old.)

How do I get my teen a Navy Federal Visa Buxx Card?

It’s as easy as 1-2-3. You can sign up at navyfederal.org/visabuxxcard. For security—and because we need to confirm your membership—you can only order Visa Buxx Cards online using a Navy Federal Debit or Credit Card (Visa or Mastercard only).

Will I be charged a fee for ordering the card?

No, there's no fee to order. The only fee applies to express delivery.

Can more than 1 teen be on the same Visa Buxx Card?

Each teen in the family is required to have a separate card with their own unique card number. If you have more than 1 teen, we make it easy for you to enroll up to 5.

Do I have to accept the Terms & Conditions?

Yes. If you don't accept the Terms & Conditions during the time you place your order, your order won't be processed. Using your Navy Federal Visa Buxx Card signifies that you accept the Terms & Conditions.

How long will it take to receive the card?

After placing your order, please allow up to 7 to 10 business days for standard delivery or 3 to 4 business days for express delivery. However, we cannot guarantee delivery timeframes for FPO/APO addresses.

Note: If you’d like express delivery, the charge is $5.00 per card. No signature is required.

Can I mail the card to my teen’s address?

Yes, cards of up to $200.00 can be delivered either to you or directly to your teen. Cards valued at more than $200.00 must be mailed to the parent's billing address.

What should I do if the card never arrives?

If neither you nor your teen receives the card within 10 business days, you can sign in to your Navy Federal account and send us an eMessage.

How do I fund a card?

Adding money is quick and easy. Just sign in anytime and use your Navy Federal Debit or Credit Card (Visa or Mastercard only).

For security reasons, the Navy Federal funding card must be in the same name as the account holder/parent on file.

Your teen can add funds, too, using Visa ReadyLink.

Visa ReadyLink is a convenient way to add funds to your teen’s card with cash. It’s as easy as presenting the card and the cash to a cashier at any Visa ReadyLink location. Once the card is swiped, the funds will be available immediately.

You can find Visa ReadyLink at thousands of U.S. locations, including 7-Eleven®, Safeway™, Vons, Pak ‘n Save®, Pavilions®, Randall's® and Tom Thumb® stores.

Are there any transaction fees associated with Visa ReadyLink?

Navy Federal doesn't charge you a fee for using this service. Some retailers may charge a fee to load value to the card. These fees, if any, are established independently by each participating provider and retailer.

Can family or friends add funds to my teen's card?

Yes, adding funds to the card is faster and safer than mailing a check or giving cash, and your teen can choose how to spend it. Once the card is activated, you’ll have the option to authorize friends and family who are Navy Federal members to add money to it. We’ll send them an email with instructions on how to enroll and add a gift.

Can my teen receive funds through Visa Money Transfer?

Your card is eligible to receive funds through Visa Money Transfer from participating financial institutions. But, since Navy Federal Credit Union isn't an originator of Visa Money Transfer, you cannot create a Visa Money Transfer from your Visa Buxx Card to another card.

How does the Visa Buxx Card work?

You can fund the card with up to $500. When your teen makes a purchase, the purchase amount is deducted from the card’s balance.

Who can use the card?

Only the person whose name appears on the card can use it.

Is identification required to use the card?

As a security measure, a merchant might ask to see your teen’s identification, which could be a school ID card or a driver's license. If your teen doesn't carry ID, the merchant can match the signature on the back of the card to the signature on the receipt.

How can my teen use the card?

The Visa Buxx Card may be used anywhere that accepts Visa Debit Cards. It can be used for purchases up to the balance remaining on the card; it isn't tied to a line of credit. The process is similar to using a debit card. At checkout, your teen selects "CREDIT" and signs the receipt or electronic pad. Or, if prompted, he/she selects "DEBIT" and enters their PIN. If your teen has cash access, the card and ATM PINs are the same.

Note: We caution against using the Visa Buxx Card at automated fuel pumps, since the transaction could result in a decline or an inconvenient hold on available funds. This could last several days. Instead, we recommend prepaying for gas purchases at the cashier.

Can I set spending limits?

Yes, you determine how much money gets loaded on the card, as well as when and how it’s loaded. You can see your teen’s spending habits by signing in on the mobile app* or online, and can suspend the card at any time. So, your teen can enjoy some financial independence within safe and structured limits.

Can my teen use the Navy Federal Visa Buxx Card at an ATM?

You can set preferences like setting limits or allowing cash access.

Your teen can then use the card to withdraw cash from a Navy Federal, CO-OP Network, or Visa/PLUS Network ATM.

Please note that the maximum amount allowable for cash withdrawals from ATMs, cash back at places such as grocery stores and drugstores, and cash advances from financial institutions that accept Visa Debit Cards is limited to $600.00 per day. You may also designate a withdrawal limit less than the maximum allowed.

Is there a fee for withdrawing cash from an ATM?

A list of free ATM locations can be found on our locator page. If your teen uses his/her card at other ATMs, including those displaying the Visa/PLUS logos, we’ll charge a $1.00 fee. The terminal owner may also charge additional fees and surcharges.

Is there a fee for using the card internationally?

Transactions made in foreign countries will post in U.S. dollars and be charged an International Service Assessment Fee of 1.0% of the transaction amount. This fee will be identified as a separate transaction on your statement.

Transactions originating on U.S. military bases, embassies, consulates and territories are exempt from the Visa International Service Assessment Fee.

What if there aren’t enough funds on the card?

We recommend checking the balance of your card before using it. But if it has insufficient funds, your teen can then use a second payment method for the difference (e.g., cash, check, credit or debit card).

It's okay for the card to fully deplete funds. If this happens, simply follow the appropriate steps to replenish the card.

Do merchants ever tie up more funds than the intended purchase price?

It's important to know that some merchants like restaurants and gas stations "reserve" more money than your teen may actually plan to spend. They do this to cover variable costs like tips or a tank of gas. Within 3 to 7 days, the "reserve" is canceled and the funds become available again on the Navy Federal Visa Buxx Card.

What if a merchant puts an item through without prior authorization?

Occasionally, a merchant does put an item through without prior authorization. If the purchase exceeds the available balance, the card will have a negative balance. If this occurs, you'll be notified to load more funds onto the card.

Will my teen’s credit rating be affected if the card is misused?

Since the Visa Buxx Card doesn't offer a line of credit, it won't impact your teen’s credit rating. However, if the card is being misused, you can suspend it at any time.

How long can my teen use the Navy Federal Visa Buxx Card?

The card is valid through the expiration ("Good Thru") date on the card, typically 3 years. Any transaction attempted after the expiration date will be declined.

How does the Visa Buxx Card help teens with budgeting?

The Visa Buxx Card teaches your teen the importance of budgeting wisely and planning accordingly. They can view the account’s history to track purchases and see how they affect the account balance in real time.

How can I guide my teen to the most appropriate places to shop, especially online?

You can review the teen’s account 24/7 to see how much they're spending and where they're spending it. You can use the information to talk about the best places to shop, money management and what you expect.

Why is the Visa Buxx Card a great way for family and friends to give gifts?

Once you set up your teen’s account, you can authorize other Navy Federal members to add money to it. Then, we’ll send them an email with instructions on how it works. It's faster and safer than mailing a check or giving cash, and your teen can choose how to spend it.

What if my teen forgets the PIN?

If your teen forgets the PIN, he/she can sign in to the website as the cardholder and select My PIN under the My Settings drop-down menu, then select Forgot PIN.

What if my teen’s card is lost or stolen?

Only parents can request replacement Visa Buxx Cards. Report a lost or stolen card immediately by calling us at 1-866-304-1909. The PIN will remain the same, and the balance will be transferred to the new card.

How can parents and teens ensure their account information is secure?

All information given to Navy Federal Visa Buxx is secure and strictly confidential. To access the account, you must enter a username and password, and answer a security question.

Once signed in, extra security measures make private information unreadable as it passes over the internet.

Why is it so important to always know the balance on the card?

Merchants cannot tell how much money is on the card until your teen tries to make a purchase. Any attempt to make a purchase for more than the available balance will be declined. While this doesn’t happen often, it’s why we recommend tracking the card activity and balance.

Will I receive a monthly statement?

Yes, you’ll receive an email advising when the monthly statement is available. Your teen will also be sent an email if you provide an email address for them. It can be viewed online at navyfederal.org/visabuxxcard.

Note: Please disregard any notifications that refer to changing your statement options, as statements are only sent electronically.

How can we track transactions and view the account balance?

There are several ways you and your teen can accomplish this.

You can receive text messages on activity like transactions and daily available balance. Please note that message and data rates may apply. You may change your text message options or opt out at any time by editing your profile or texting "STOP" to 868472 or 288472.

What do I do if the card is expired and it still has a balance?

A renewal card will be sent to the address of record 2 months prior to the expiration month. Your teen will be able to use the existing card until the last day of the month in which it expires. Once you have your renewal card, you should destroy the old one.

Three months before the expiration, you should check your profile to ensure that we have your current address so the card will be delivered to the correct address. If you haven't received your reissued Navy Federal Visa Buxx Card by the end of the expiration month, you should call 1-866-304-1909. Cardholder accounts with no activity and a zero balance will be closed automatically after 365 days of inactivity.

Can the Visa Buxx Card ever be suspended?

Either you or your teen can suspend the card at any time by signing in to the mobile app* or website. It cannot, however, be used again until it's reactivated by the parent.

What if I want to close my teen’s card permanently?

You can close your teen’s card by signing in or calling 1-866-304-1909. It will remain active for 10 days so all pending transactions have posted. Any remaining balance will be credited to the account you used to fund the card. If, however, the card has a negative balance after all transactions have posted, your funding account will be charged for the outstanding balance. You'll be notified via email 5 days prior to any debit or credit being applied to your account.

Please keep in mind that once you've permanently closed the card, you cannot reactivate or reopen it, but you can open a brand new account.
